  1. A plague is a term applied to any epidemic 
  2. DISEASE with a high mortality rate, but it 
  3. usually refers to the bubonic plague. This is 
  4. a disease transmitted by fleas (carried by 
  5. the black rat) which infect the sufferer 
  6. with the bacillus Yersinia pestis. An early 
  7. symptom is swelling of lymph nodes, usually 
  8. in the armpit and groin.
